The Importance of Third-Party Testing and Product Evaluation
From building components and N95 masks to the cars we drive, most products we rely on every day undergo third-party testing to verify they meet established safety and performance standards. Metal roofing is no exception—and arguably, the stakes are even higher.
When severe weather strikes, no one wants a roofing system to fail. A compromised roof can lead to stormwater intrusion, wind damage, costly repairs, and in extreme cases, risks to occupant safety. That’s why independent testing, product evaluation, and code compliance are so critical to metal roofing performance.
Why Third-Party Testing Matters

When evaluating metal roofing suppliers and their products, it’s important to understand not only how performance claims are made, but how they are verified.
While metal roofing products may appear similar at a glance, performance can vary significantly based on design details such as panel profiles, interlock geometry, fastening methods, and the grade and thickness of steel used.
Comparing this information across manufacturers can be complex and time-consuming, especially when test data is presented in different formats or based on different assumptions. Independent third-party testing and product evaluation reports help remove this uncertainty by validating performance through standardized, accredited processes. These reports provide confidence that a product has been rigorously tested and certified to meet applicable building codes.
Ensuring Accurate Product Performance
Accredited third-party testing ensures that published product performance data is accurate, complete, and free from represented correctly. Independent evaluators review not only the test results but also the testing methods and any extrapolations of data used to assess product performance.
Product evaluation reports go a step further by confirming that verified performance aligns with the requirements of recognized building codes. This process helps ensure that products are suitable for their intended applications and compliant with regional and national standards.

Third-Party Evaluation in Practice

ASC Building Products maintains two IAPMO-UES Evaluation Reports. One covering standing seam metal roofing systems and one for exposed-fastener panels. Separate reports are required because performance characteristics vary between these two distinct product families.
- IAPMO-UES Report ER-0309 evaluates ASC Building Products’ standing seam panels with concealed fasteners for use as exterior roof and wall covering systems.
- IAPMO-UES Report ER-0550 provides the same evaluation for exposed fastener panel systems.
These reports document compliance with multiple building codes, including the 2021, 2018, 2015, and 2012 International Building Code (IBC), as well as the 2022 and 2019 California Residential Code.
To ensure accuracy and consistency, all testing referenced in these reports must be conducted in laboratories that comply with ISO/IEC 17025, the global standard for testing and calibration laboratories.
The evaluations reference rigorous testing protocols developed by organizations such as the American Iron and Steel Institute (AISI) and ASTM International. One example is ASTM E1592, which establishes the standard test method for evaluating the structural performance of metal roofing and siding systems under uniform static air pressure.
Beyond performance validation, these evaluation reports provide highly prescriptive installation requirements, including clip types, fastener specifications, and attachment spacing necessary to achieve code compliance. This level of detail can help streamline inspections, reduce rework, and support project-specific performance requirements—particularly in regions with higher wind or seismic demands.
Not Just About The Panel
Third-party testing extends beyond structural performance to include the metal roofing panel’s coating system.
Metal roofing is often selected for its ability to reflect solar heat, reduce heat transfer into the building, and improve energy efficiency while offering a wide range of color options.

Radiative performance is commonly evaluated by the Cool Roof Rating Council (CRRC), an independent organization that establishes credible methods for testing and labeling the solar reflectance and thermal emittance of roofing and exterior wall products. Testing is performed in accredited laboratories and includes both initial (new) and aged performance measurements. Products that meet CRRC requirements are listed in the CRRC Product Directory.
One key advantage of metal roofing is its ability to maintain reflective performance over time. Unlike some roofing materials that lose reflectivity as they accumulate dirt and grime, metal roofing often retains performance similar to its initial values. Verified radiative performance is also essential for compliance with programs such as California Title 24 and LEED v4.1, both of which rely on CRRC-approved aged testing data.
Metal roofing continues to grow in popularity due to its durability, longevity, and resistance to the elements. Third-party testing and product evaluation provide essential assurance that a roofing system delivers the performance homeowners, builders, and designers expect.
Final Thoughts on Third-Party Testing

Not all metal roofing products are tested to the same standards, and not all manufacturers invest in the rigorous evaluation and accreditation required to demonstrate long-term performance.
While reviewing testing data and evaluation reports can still be complex, working with an established manufacturer that prioritizes third-party validation, technical support, and clear installation guidance can help simplify the process—and deliver confidence from specification through installation.
