Metal Roofing and Siding Sustainability, Federal Tax Credits, and Solar Solutions

When it comes to green projects, building materials matter.  ASC Building Products metal roof and wall panels have been a product of choice in achieving sustainability goals to meet LEED Certification, Passive House Institute Certification, or Net Zero Energy Certification.

With today’s coating technology, metal roof and wall panels offer performance efficiencies, such as solar reflectance and emittance of heat, which drives down energy use and allows for the building to work with the environment.  Moreover, metal panels are long-lasting and can be repurposed or reused.  With their high recycled content, they are also 100% recyclable at the end of their life use.

Homeowners can achieve a green design that delivers on long-lasting beauty and performance while saving on energy costs.

ASC Building Products’ selection of cool colors assists in meeting the sustainability targets developed through LEED, Energy Star, and CA Title 24. The solar performance data of our standard coatings have been tested and maintained by the Cool Roof Rating Council (CRRC).

What is the Metal Roof Tax Credit?

The Federal Energy Star tax credit extends to metal roofs with qualifying “cooling” pigments like those provided by ASC Building Products.

  • Homeowners who made an energy-efficiency home improvement by installing an ASC Building Products ENERGY STAR-qualified metal roof from 2017 to the end of 2021 can currently be claimed.
  • Homeowners with qualifying roofing systems may claim 10% of the material cost (labor is not eligible to be claimed) up to $500.
  • Homeowners who have not submitted for the tax credit for any energy-efficient home improvement (new windows, doors, insulation, or Energy Star-qualified roof) may qualify.
  • The homeowner’s primary residence may be eligible for the tax credit.

How Do I Apply For The Tax Credit?

  • To receive tax credit, the Homeowner must fill out a federal tax form called Form 5695 and file it with their taxes.

⇒ Download Form 5695

Energy Star Roof Product Criteria.

  • Low Slope roofs must have an initial solar reflectance of ≥ 0.65. After 3 years, the solar reflectance must be  ≥ 0.50.
  • Steep Slope roofs must have an initial solar reflectance of  ≥ 0.25. After 3 years, the solar reflectance must be  ≥ 0.15.

ASC Building Product Certification Statement.

The manufacturer certification statement is a signed statement from the manufacturer certifying that the metal roof qualifies for the tax credit. This document should be retained for tax purposes.

ASC Building Products metal roofs are coated in our Dura Tech™ xl paint system which is formulated with highly reflective cool pigments that increase the solar reflectance and lowers the surface temperature of our metal roofs.

The Dura Tech™ xl paint system is offered in a range of cool colors that are Energy Star® certified and may contribute to saving homeowners up to 40% in energy costs.

State rebates and federal tax credits have now helped bring the cost of installing a solar roof within reach, and ASC Building Products is here to help. ASCBP metal roofs compliment a variety of renewable energy technologies, including solar panels. While ASCBP only manufactures roof panels, we are familiar with the solar industry, and the benefits of pairing our steel roofs with solar panels to help you achieve your environmental and financial goals with your new solar roof.

ASC Building Products metal roof panels compliment a wide variety of solar panel options, including modular photovoltaic (PV) panels and thin film PV laminate panels. The peel-and-stick method of installing thin film PV panels to the flat pan of our standing seam metal roofing panels is one available option. Another option includes mounting modular panels to the standing seams of our roof panels, using a non-penetrating clip system.

  • To find out more in regard to a non-penetrating clip that attaches to the standing seam rib, visit S-5! Attachment Solutions. The S-5! Attachment Solutions Load Chart provides specific load testing of ASC Building Products panels.
  • To find out more about Solar Energy options available to you, visit DC Power Systems. They are a full service wholesale distributor of renewable energy products.

Whatever solar panel option and mounting method you choose, ASC Building Products offers roofing panels that accommodate a majority of solar panels and mounting systems that can help achieve your financial and environmental goals with your new solar roof.
